I feel what Gene did to Finny was on purpose and he even knows it. He wants to practically be Finny and hates himself. He wants to be the center or attention and have all the pride that Finny feels. Sometimes i feel like Gene has a really good friendship with Finny but it is obvious that Finny has a better friendship towards Gene then Gene has towards Finny.

The jouncing of then limb was an accident. The book shows Genes feelings, he's not hiding anything from the reader so prior to the "planned" accident, he would have said something like, oh hes gunna get it. BUt he didnt, jsut the fact that it was an accident and happened to be a huge coicidance, gene AND finny are both in denial about it. Gene has this guilt uopn himself as if he realy did mean to jounce the limb, and when he tried to admit a mistaken lie to Finny, he was in denial about it too and ould not beelive the falst words coming out of Genes mouth, they both subconciousllyknow this was not on purpose but they secretly beleive it was.

james ricotta, if you still my ideas, im going to throw u off a tree and break ur leg.

I think that Finny's accident was impulsive but at the time gene did it he did not feel guilty about it. After Finny fell out of the tree Gene was not upset, shocked or nervous. He didnt even climb down the tree he jumped into the water instead. I think that Gene is jealous of Finny and that leads him to do bad things to him impulsively but in reality i dont think Gene wants to harm him.

Gene feels that Finny's accident was all his fault and he feels a lot of guilt because of it. Because of this guilt he has been helping Finny and doing anything he wants. I think Finny's accident was an accident because I do not think Gene would ever want to purposly hurt his best friend.

Gene feels like he is hiding a lot from Finny because he knows that he jounced the branch on the tree on purpose. Finny's accident was planned becuase Gene felt envious of Finny's great personality and he wanted some of the fire. In the book it talked about how Finny could get out of anything because people liked him.

I feel that Gene jounced the limb on purpose. He wants to be as successful in sports as Finny is and dislikes how he never gets in trouble in school. So from these situations, he is definitely a little jealous of Finny. On the other hand, Finny does feel a little bit jealous of how Gene is so good in school but wouldn't try to hurt him;even though Gene thought he tried 2 by making him hangout instead of studying.

I think Gene still feels funny around Finny becuase he still feels guity for what he did. I think it was more of an impulse because Gene was probably thinking of his envy of Finny at that moment. If Gene planned it, we would have heard about it before he did it.

Although I think it was on accident, I do sometimes think that Gene subconsiously did it on purpose. He is obviously very jealous of Finny's life since he is popular, athletic, and lovable. This is shown in the novel because as soon as Finny leaves on medical, Gene wears Finny's clothes and suddenly played sports.

I feel that the emotions of Gene toward Finny are scattered. He was angered when he jounced the limb, but at the same time he woships Finny. So the accident was on impulse because Gene had had enough of Finny being the big man on campus. He has a feeling of being trapped in Finny's shadow.

Gene is very jealous and insecure around Finny. I think Finny's accident was done on purpose. For example, when Brinker begins joking about how Gene caused the accident on purpose to get a room for himself, Gene gets very tense and nervous when answering Brinker's questions. Also, if the accident wasn't done on purpose, then why does Gene need tell Finny that it was him who jounced the limb? Is his conscience telling him he has to because he is guilty?

i think genejounced the lime but he did it with out mentily knowing it so he did not think about the consiquensis and what could happen but when he was gone i think gene was a little happy because he was not phines friend to people he was gene

I think Gene jounced the limb on purpose. I think that gene actually believed that finny was the perfect figure that nothing can ever go wrong with him. I feel the reason he did it was to find out if finny would actually got hurt. And I also find that he jounced the limb out of anger because he felt they finny was so good at everything so he wanted to be the center of attention for once.

Gene has mixed feelings about Finny. They are friends but Gene is envious of Finny. Gene jounced th limb by impulse. He didn't know that he was doing it until after Finny fell from the tree. He didn't think that Finny would even get hurt. After Finny fell Gene jumped from the tree into the river. Gene would never do something like that, he doesn't have, i guess you could say, the guts to do it. He was just really jelouse of Finny so he did it without really thinking about it.

The conflicting feelings that Gene has about FInny is jealously and guilt. Gene constantly looks up to Finny and wants to be more like him. This was seen when Finny was at home from the accident and Gene wore his clothes. The feelings of guilt come from the accident of Gene jouncing the limb. I think the accident was impulsive because we had never heard of him thinking to do this before it happened. Also, he is so upset afterword that when Gene talks to Dr.Stanpole he begins to cry because he feels so bad. I don't think his feelings would be so strong if he did this on purpose. I also don't think Gene would do something like that purposely to his best friend.

The conflicting feelings are that Gene is unsure whether he really tried to Finny on purpose or not and if he really likes Finny or would like to be him, i think the accident was impulsive but it started to make Gene think if he really wanted to hurt Finny or not because he gets so paranoid about it

Brittney said...

Although Gene always had envy for Finny, I think that it was done on impulse. Finny was good at everything and he would never imagine anything to disrupt that. Gene probably didnt realize what he had done until after Finny fell, and now he feels guilty but at the same time he's relieved. This is proved from when he tries on Finny's clothes.

nicole gouch said...

I think that what Gene did to Finny was completely impulsive. He never planned to do anything to hurt him but he was so frustated that he did it without thinking. I think now he regrets it and wishes he didnt do it. Even though him and Finny are both jealous of eachother and have some problems, theyre still good friends and really care about eachother.

What Gene did to Finny was on purpose and he felt really guilty about it. But when he admitted it to Finny, Finny didn't want to hear about it. Finny thought he was lying. I think that Finny knows its the truth but he doesn't want to believe that his best freind would do that to him. He also doesn't want to believe Gene did that to him becuase of the why he did it. Gene said that Finny was always making him feel like nothing and Finny felt bad about that.

Anonymous said...

The the only conflicting feeling Gene has about Finny is jealousy. Jealousy of his athletic ability and jelousy of his ability to get away with everything.

The reader doesn't know for sure if Finny's accident was planed or not becuase who ever Finny is telling the story to may or may not be getting every detail. I don't think it was planned though because he never said anything about plans prior to the accident. So chances are it was compulsive.

Unknown said...

I think that Finny's accident was an accident becuase Gene and Finny are very good friends. Gene needs Finny becuase Finny helps Gene have friends and become popular. I don not think that there are any conflicting feelings between Gene and Finny.

Anonymous said...

I think that gene is very jealous and insecure when it comes to finny. I also feel that the accident was done on purpose because of these feelings towards finny. Gene wants finny's life. If it wasn't done on purpose than gene wouldn't be feeling so guilty about it.

The conflicting feelings that gene has about finny are guilt and remorce. His feelings of jeoulosy caused him to harm finny. It was an impulse accident. He did not really plan to hurt finny, inside he just felt bad feelings to his friend, and so he just did it subcontiously he did it really on reacting to to the actual feeling he has inside. Leper tells Gene he believes inside, gene is exerpiencing angry mean feelings, he is the only one that actually knows than gene did it to hurt finny

I think what Gene did was on purpose, he might have not thought it through all the way, but he felt he had to do something. Gene is always conflicted with his friendship feelings towards Finny.

I think what Gene did to Finny was an accident, but i also think that Gene is sort of happy that it did happen. Now that Finny isn't in Genes way, its easier for Gene to be himself and not have to follow everything that Finny does.

I think that gene wants to be like finny and purposly makes him fall off the limb so he can't get jealous anymore. Finny is good at everything and Gene can't take it anymore because he looks like a loser compared to his best friend. Jealousy gets the best of gene in this book and thats why finny gets hurt.

I feel what Gene did to Finny was on purpose, but I don't think that Gene really knew what he was doing. Gene also wants to tell Finny but Finny won't listen and gene also wants to do good in school while finny just wants to cut class and focus on sports

the feelings that gene have for finny is that gene wants to be finny. what gene did to finny was planned because he didnt want finny to be the only one with all the friends and can get away with things easy.

I beleive that Gene ruinied Phinny's leg on purpose. HE seemed to resent that he was always second to Phinny, and he beleives that he lives in the shadow of another mans acheivments. By taking Phinny out of the picture, Gene can now try and build his own self image and be the new Phinny at Devon.

I feel that what Gene did to Finny was by accident because he feels very remorseful about the incident. Some of his conflicting thoughts are how he ussed to loathe Finny and now he is confused about feeling guilty since he inadvertently caused Finny's horrific accident. However, it wasn't premeditated and this book gives us all the insights into Gene's moods and ideas, and he never intentionally meant harm to come to Finny.

I think that Finny's accident was impulsive. I believe that Gene felt guilty about his action, yet in a way he was almost pleased. I think it was an accident because if it wasn't, Gene would not feel as guilty. But, he likes the fact that Finny is hurt because now he can make a name for himself without Finny taking over the spotlight.

I feel that Gene breaking Finny's leg was impulsive. Gene felt great grief for Finny and he felt guilty himself. He even tried to apologize to Finny, which resulted in failure. This shows that Gene had not meant to harm Finny, but that he had just lost himself in a similar way to Leper going crazy at the military base. Gene had been feeling small and weak compared to Finny, and in his self resentment he accidentally caused Finny to be knocked off the tree limb.

I feel as though Gene purposly jumped on the branch thing. He was bothered by Finny at that moment and thought that they were competing for something. Gene now feels really guilty about what happened. Finny is in denial that it was on purpose though.

I think what Gene did to Finny was impulsive. Gene did this because he doesn't believe in his self. He wants to be like Finny, the all around great guy.Gene push his friendship away, when all Finny wants to do is be best friends.

I don't think that Gene planned Finny's accident, but I do think that he does not regret it. Even though he feels guilty about doing it because he is his friend, i believe his jealousy overpowers his guilt.

I think Gene shook the tree on purpose. I feel this is because Gene wants to be Finny so bad that he will do anything he can to take his place. Also, when Brinker and the other boys take Gene to the butt room he is very sarcastic and insecure about the questions asked of him. Now Gene is feeling guilty for what he did because more people and wondering what really happened. I feel we already know that this was't really an accident because he already took the blame for what happened.

I think that Gene jounced the limb on purpose. Gene has always been jealous of Finny's abilities and his superiority over him. Gene didn't think about what he was doing he just did it and I think this shows how he really feels about Gene. Gene always freaks out when anyone brings the topic up which I think proves the fact that he did it on purpose. If it was a mistake then maybe he wouldn't feel as bad. An example was in chapter ten when Leper tells Gene that he pushed Finny off the tree limb. Gene pushed him off the chair showing how he is still in denial and can't admit to himself that he did it on purpose.

carly bogart said...

i think that the jouncing of the limb was an invoultuntary action. gene has been secrety hating finny in every way and letting his envy eat away at him. his sunbconsiouse mind had enough resulting in finny falling of the tree. i think that now gene regrets jouncing the limb but his subconsiouse mind is now relived.

I think Gene is very jealous of Finny because Finny is everything Gene wants to be, but I also think Gene is grateful towards Finny because Finny has been a good friend to him. I think Finny's accident was planned, but it didn't go the way Gene expected it to and ended up being far more serious. I think this because Gene feels guilt throughout the book and even attempts to confess to Finny.

Eric said...

I think that Gene jouncing the limb was not an act of Gene trying to sabotage Finny, it was a complete accident. Gene and Finny are best of friends, even if they are both good at different things. Like in the beggining when Gene said that him and Finny were "Even", why would Gene try to purposely hurt his only real best friend. Even though he is jeaulous of Finny in some aspects, Gene thinks its his fault only because he has no other reason not to believe that he hurt Finny on purpose, but it is not the case.

The conflicting feelings that Gene has about finny is guilt and sorrow because he feels his life has no meaning anymore thats why he wants to go to the war. I Think Finny's accident was not planned but at the same time finny knew what he was doing and did not realize the signifiance of what he was doing. For example Gene would not be so ashimed of himself if it was on purpose.

I believe the jouncing of the limb by gene was subconsiously on purpose. It was a way of releasing his frustration that he has for finny's perfection. He would never do this consiously because he is gene's one true friend. Gene knows that he meant to do this with his admission of guilt to finny. his act was impulsive not on accident but not completely on purpose.

I think that it was an accident. There was no indication that Gene was thinking of jouncing the limb to hurt Finny. It was a pure accident and it just so happens that things start to set up for Gene and his emotions. Yes he feels bad about it and tries to tell Finny it was him who did it but Finny is in denial that it was Gene because honestly i think Finny cherishes his friendship more with Gene even though it is very hard to see it in the book, than Gene does with Finny in their friendship. This is so because when Gene puts on Finny's clothes and starts to like what he sees as himself as Finny, his personality starts to change.

Twalsh said...

I think Gene was jealous that Finny can do everything and has so many friends. I believe that what Gene did to Finny was impulsive because a little bit before that was when he really started to realize that he was jealous. He was only waiting for the perfect moment and that turned out to be at the tree.

Gene has mixed feelings about Finny. Gene is jealous of Finny therefore I think that that Gene jounced the limb on purpose, but he didn't think it all the way through. I don’t think that Gene thought of the severity of his actions and the consequences that could have arose. After Finny fell into the river Gene jumped right in to save him, also after Finny got hurt Gene Felt really guilty for what he did. Therefore I think that Gene meant to do it but didn't think out the consequences and after the fact he would take it all back.

Gene feels guilty in some ways, he has ruined Finny's life, but I also feel like in some sick way he isn't that upset about what he did. He tries on Finny's clothes and feels like he no longer will ever feel envy in his life. I think the jouncing of the limb was impulsive, but it was not an accident. When Gene realized that he would be on the limb with Finny, he subcontiously realized this was his chance to break out of Finny's shadow.

AlyssaSadusky said...

I think, subliminally, Gene did want to jounce the limb. Since he feels such animosity towards anyone who brings up the subject he is obviously getting defensive. He feels the guilt so that is a sure sign that what he did, he did delibrity even though his mind might not be able to accept it.

crystal j said...

I think that the "accident" was an involuntary action caused by strong feelings and envy. I have also done these actions a regret it. Although his personality is the complete opposite of Finny he wants to be him. This is proven when he puts on Finnys clothes and try to participatein sports. He want to be that popular guy that is amazing as sports and very socialable. Their friendship is somewhat of a one way trip. Gene loves Finny more than Finny loves Gene because Finny has more friends than Gene and Gene only has Finny so Gene will base his life around Finny and with their differences it is giving them a space and Gene wants to close it.

I think that gene meant to do it but didn't think. After Finny got injured he felt bad. Gene still shouldn't of do that.
